If one warning is not enough!top
Three warningsWhen the sign says you need to take care, well you need to take care. Given this is New Zealand, I'm sure this sign has been places here to try and stop the "stupid" tourists from hurting themselves and
Guess what, if you get too closetop
It will fall on your head...The sign is pretty clear but while we were at the glaciers we saw a group of teenage Japanese walking up to the face and then actually on the glacier in their tenis shoes... The next
Read the sign to see why the boy is smiling...top
  Frosty Boy
If you're too big it will hurt! top
Too bigWell, if your a truck driver in Kyoto you should get the idea that if you're vehicle is over 2.1 meters tall (just over 6 feet) it will hurt if you continue to drive down this road. I'm guessing that they also need to warn the taller westerns too, and that's not just the basketball players.
Noodle UFO top
Noddle UFOWe saw this plate of noodles steaming outside a restaurant near Lake Ashi. The dry ice they had used and the shape (from a distance, at least) made you think ET had arrived - instead closer inspection revealed just more animated plastic food.
I know Japan is clean but... top
Japan is cleanWe all know that Japan is one of the cleanest and environmentally conscientious countries in the world, but we never expected to see THIS level of dedication.
The biggest joke in Egypt top

Quiet PleaseA skill drivers in Egypt learn early is the use of the car horn. This skill apparently substitutes for other road skills, such as keeping to your lane, ability to give way to animals in the road and stopping for red lights. So given all of this we were shocked to see this sign, which could dangerously hamper traffic flow.

As we took the picture however we were pleased to still hear the constant background noise of car horns - apparently the use of the horn can substitute for obeying road signs too.

How many camels was that? top

As you may know, in Egypt a man can have four wives. Before all the men out there get too excited you should know it can get to be very expensive as we to learnt, especially if you like blondes. In our travels we met several street traders who made ever increasing offers to Andrew for Susan.

Offers started at a donkey, made by a guard at Edfu Temple (which was refused) and moved up through 500 to 10,000 camels in the Aswan Bazaar, and this was before Andrew had really started to negotiate. We're sure the traders love to pull the leg of the tourists but it can be interesting see what a wife is worth.

By the way a good camel is worth about US$1500 - which means the best offer for Susan was about $15M.

On the flip-side, Susan received a request from a shopkeeper to make him husband number 4 (she was walking with three men at the time), and make him "a happy man". She declined the offer.

Prices top

The price of gasoline is equal to about $5/gallon, so those of you back in California complaining about $2/gallon should count yourselves lucky. It takes about $50 to fill the tank in our economy car (about the size of a Toyota Corolla).

A pair of Levi jeans costs $80 in Germany and the UK.

The cost of food and drink in Prague. Half a liter of beer is 60 cents, a dinner for two came to LESS than $9.00, which included, beer, a big dish of pasta, a three topping pizza and a coke.

On the Menu top

In a UK pizzeria, we found a pizza on the menu called "The American", boasting "lots of pepperoni" (which turned out to be exactly 11 pepperoni on a 10" pizza) and a combination of mozzarella and Red Leicester cheese (like how many Americans have ever heard of Red Leicester cheese?). This was followed by the "American Hot" pizza, which had pepperoni and some kind of hot peppers similar to jalapenos, but milder. The best of all was the "American Hot and Sunny" pizza, which had lots of pepperoni (not), hot peppers, and a fried egg sunny-side-up. Where do they get these ideas?

Sour milk is served for breakfast in Norway, Sweden, and Iceland. Norway and Sweden also served pickled herring as a breakfast specialty - yum!

McDrive top
McDriveSo far on Continental Europe, we've found that McDonald's drive through (a new concept not in common use) is called a McDrive. This picture was taken at a McDonalds in Cahours, France where we walked in to find people smoking cigarettes and drinking beer which is available from the menu. Hmmm...McDrink-n-McDrive?
Speck Minus top
Speck MinusThis car, made by Smart and designed by Swatch has a bigger (but not by much) brother made by Mercedes. These cars were first sighted by Andrew on a work trip to Milan, but they are apparently everywhere in Europe. They're great for company advertising and getting into small parking spaces, but I wouldn't want to trust my life in one on the freeway. Andrew is standing in this picture to give a little perspective.
Bad Day Gargoyle top
Next time you're having a bad day, just think about this poor guy. This is a gargoyle / drainage spout on an old chateau.
Pepto Bismol Gargoyle top
Sick
Have too much to eat or drink last night? Well you might want to grab the Pepto Bismol like this gargoyle. Also if you have really sharp eyes you might spot want happens if you don't get to the medication (look for the gargoyle in the background)
Norway (Trondheim) Gilroy? top
GilroyWe saw this sign in Trondheim, Norway and was just reminded of all our friends at home.
Tank Speed limit top
Tank speed limitWell I'm sure this is a hang over from the cold war but can you really believe the invading army's tanks sticking to the posted speed limit ?
Follow that sign top
Wrong directionWell no, I'm not going to obey this sign - The last I hear we were not required to follow the German autobahn sign to hell...

Beware of kittenstop
Cat crossingThis sign was snapped in Upsala, Sweden were they really like to look after their cats.

Andrew Pregnant? top
Andrew pregnantAhhhh... No, Andrew is not really pregnant, it just looks like it. By the way he's not sure what all the fuss is about - I'm sure wearing this thing for 9 months would be 'no sweat'. OUCH - that's the sound of very hard dope slap...
Amorous Bears top
Amorous bearsAmorous bears is Sweden - no more need to be said, and if your still curious click on the picture!

Caught Short on the street?top
Porta LooSo you get caught short in the street in the Netherlands - No problem these convenient conveniences are there to provide the basics, as long as your a man and you don't need to wash your hands afterwards.

Lost Teddy top
Missing teddyThis poster was seen in Amsterdam and tells of a much loved teddy with a droopy noise which had lost its way - We hope that the teddy and the owner are soon repatriated.

Statue of No Libertytop
Statue of No LibertyThis is the Statue of No Liberty, seen in Amsterdam. Our guess was it symbolized the world of the 'suit' and big business. However as we are relying on our stock to fund our trip and good jobs when we get back we reserve further comment...

  Stinky Showerstop
In Reykjavik, hot water is provided by natural hot springs. As a result, the showers smell a little sulfuric, like rotten eggs. What a wonderful way to start the day!

  'No' business sense top
We saw a sign in Oslo for a company called 'Smart'. There web address, which was displayed on a HUGE banner on the front of their building is WWW.SMART.NO - Well I guess they aren't that Smart after all.

  Dutch Sprinkles top
A little know fact - the Dutch are fanatical about sprinkles, yes the little colored ones you put on cakes, etc. They particularity like chocolate one for breakfast.

Campground No-No's top
No pissing This sign shows what you can't do at the Landmannalaugar hot springs campground. This works no matter what language you speak!
Don't Jump top
No jumpingJust in case you though it was OK to jump down a steep 40ft drop into a fast moving river and waterfall - Just you think again! We are sure this sign was placed here by the Icelandic "Ministry of the bleeding obvious" for the sake of the tourists.

Icelandic Last Namestop
Most Icelanders do not have last names, at least as we know them. They take the first name of their father (or occasionally, their mother), and add the word "son" or "dotter" (daughter in Icelandic) to the end of the name. For example, if Andrew's father's name is Eric, his name would be Andrew Ericson. If Suzanne's father's name were Henry, she would be known as Suzanne Henrysdotter. Also, Icelandic women do not change their last name when they get married, since they cannot become somebody else's daughter. Therefore, it is possibe to have a married couple with one son and one daughter, all with different last names! The Icelandic phone directory is listed by first name.

By the way, approximately 10% of Icelanders do have last names that don't comply to this rule, but these are old family names. People who immigrate to Iceland (usually spouses of native Icelanders) must adopt an Icelandic name, and children born in Iceland must be given an Icelandic first name.

Icelandic Numbers top
Icelandic is apparently a very difficult language to learn. We can testify to the fact that it's difficult just pronouncing the names of the places we visited. However, we had to laugh when our guide book advised against using the numbers 1-4, as they were very complex in regard to gender and forms. What were we supposed to do, go to a restaurant and ask for a table for 7 minus 5? Lucky for us, everyone spoke English very well.

Rock and Creamtop
Rock and CreamThis new "Rock and Cream" flavor for Doritos (the famous American tortilla chips) is in fact Ranch flavor. We also found that Ranch is some time know as "American" in some countries.
Slow Food top
Well if you see this sign outside a restaurant you might be hesitant to eat there - that is with the combination of slow food and snails. Well the restaurant is actually in Ia, Greece (see our Greece section) and although they were a little slow between courses the food was very good, .
Car meets watertop
Car in waterThis is a road sign seen in Marlow (UK). By the way it is positioned just in front of a wall by a river, that looks just like the picture.

Dog Dotop
Hot Dog doYes, it is steaming...

Falling Tree top
This sign was found in the park surrounding a Chateau in France. Good incentive not to sit and relax under a tree!
